Celebrity (noun): "A famous person, especially in entertainment or sport."

That definition certainly applies to the "celebrity" aspect of the New Zealand Open in Arrowtown.

The invited stars at The Hills and Millbrook come largely from the world of sport, with Australian cricket greats Ricky Ponting and Allan Border, former Black Caps captain Stephen Fleming, former Wallabies captain Nick Farr-Jones, the great Jeff Wilson, and former All Blacks Andrew Mehrtens and Justin Marshall all involved.

On the entertainment side, there is television host Phil Keoghan, New Zealand's Got Talent judge Cris Judd and celebrity chef Josh Emmet.

Finally, there is Mark Richardson, who sort of spans both worlds.

Me, I'm neutral about the inclusion of celebrities in an elite sports tournament, though I appreciate it has been a regular part of some American tournaments for years.

If the budget was not an issue, which celebrities would we like to see at the New Zealand Open?

Let's go with:

1. Samuel L Jackson - He's obviously the first choice. A cool cat and a fine golfer, the American actor could surely be tempted by a visit to Lord of the Rings country. (There were some black actors in LOTR, right?)

2. Bill Murray - And he's obviously the second choice. Murray is an entertaining regular at celebrity pro-ams, though right now he will be mourning the death of fellow Ghostbuster Harold Ramis. (Spengler!)

3. Don Johnson and Kevin Costner - Let's reunite the lads from Tin Cup.

4. Shane Warne - Loves his golf, and you just know Warnie will give us something to write about.

5. Sylvester Stallone - I'd like to see him drawling, "Yo, Mike" at Sir Michael Hill.

6. Adam Sandler - A talented golfer. And you can imagine him sucking back on a bottle of New Zealand water and saying, "That is some damn fine H-two-O."

7. Michael Jordan - Swoon.
