Golf: Bay of Plenty player has name to live up to

Look out - there is another Lee coming out of Bay of Plenty.

Hot on the heels of Danny Lee is Peter Lee, also from Rotorua, also born in Korea, and also with plenty of talent on the golf course.

Peter Lee, who turned 18 last week, was named player of the tournament at the interprovincial championship which finished at the Otago Golf Club on Saturday.

Lee won seven of his eight games and squared the other one.

He also won the playoff in the semifinal against Southland's Scott Hellier, draining a fine putt on the first extra hole.

Lee, who was playing at No 2 for the Bay in his first championship, enjoyed the week but was not going overboard in praising his play.

''I'm happy with my form,'' he said.

''I didn't make a lot of mistakes, which really helps. I did not play all that great but then I didn't play bad, either.

''I played solid during the week and that is what is really needed around here. I usually got off to a good start and then kept going on."

Nicknamed ''The Robot'' by his team-mates, because of his ability to not get distracted and play methodical golf, Lee has just left Rotorua Lakes High School, and will be working next year, as well as looking to play as many golf tournaments as possible.

Long-term, a professional career beckons, but there is still much to learn.

Lee staged a great recovery in the semifinal to keep his side in the match. He was two down with two to play, after Hellier holed a great birdie on the 15th.

But Lee was solid on the tricky 17th hole and then managed to win the last hole with a crunch putt at the end.

It then went to the first hole to decide the winner, and Lee made a 15m putt. That put huge pressure on Hellier, and he could not match the feat.

It was an impressive putt from Lee but one he shrugged off.

''I wasn't nervous as I had already been in that position on the green. I had a good idea how it was going to break and it managed to go the right way."
