Dominic Brettkelly and Juliana Hung, both of Canterbury, took the honours in the men’s and women’s Canterbury strokeplay championships over 54 holes on the Waitikiri course in Christchurch at the weekend.
Brettkelly tied with Rangiora’s Kazuma Kobori on 212 but took the title after winning a sudden-death playoff.
Hung also finished on 212 and that gave her the women’s title by six strokes from fellow Cantabrian Jeonghyun Lee.
Although Kobori lost the playoff, he remains tied with Brettkelly as the best of the senior and under-19 players in the House of Travel series which continues with the Otago championship at Balmacewen this weekend and the Southland event next month.
Canterbury women dominated wand Southland’s Danielle Price broke their run of places, coming in at eighth. In the men’s event, Canterbury players were also to the fore although four Southlanders finished in the top 10.
Otago players seemed to struggle on the dogleg Waitikiri course. Fraser MacLachlan (Millbrook) finished in a tie for 10th, six strokes off the pace on 218.
Duncan Croudis (Otago) finished three further shots back on 221, in a tie for 13th.
