A sense of calm washed over Ramona Bachmann as she lined up her penalty kick.

The Swiss forward was confident — and she should have been, with her goal hitting the back of the net to open the scoring in her team’s 2-0 Fifa Women’s World Cup win against the Philippines in Dunedin last night.

"I knew it would be an important moment," Bachmann said.

Swiss coach Inka Grings was relieved to get the first win and was proud to share the moment with her players.

There was plenty of movement early, but they remained patient and were rewarded with Bachmann’s goal.

Her side played "very competently", but she praised the Filipinos for creating opportunities and being a "good surprise".

"That’s part of the beauty of a World Championship," Grings said.

Philippines coach Alen Stajcic said Switzerland were the better side, but he was proud of the courage and heart his team showed at their first World Cup.

"First time you come into a World Cup you expect nerves and you expect people to really suffer from the occasion, but I think our players didn’t show that," Stajcic said.

The Philippines had a large support base behind them at the game and they felt that everywhere they played, he said.

"For the players to feel that energy and emotion [was] almost surreal.

"I can’t thank the supporters enough for the way that they come out and support us wherever we’ve been around the world, particularly the numbers in the south of New Zealand like this to come out and support the team is just really special."

Both teams said the Football Ferns’ 1-0 win against Norway, who are also in their group, made the pool interesting.
