Mike Smith dispenses pills by day and hopes to dish out some Chatham Cup medicine at the weekend.

Smith (34) is the veteran of the Caversham team that plays Three Kings United in tomorrow's quarterfinal at the Caledonian Ground.

While many of his team-mates are students, Smith works as a pharmacist.

It is an occupation, understandably, that leads to assumptions his team-mates come to him for advice on every illness and ailment.

"It depends on what sort of problem they've got," Smith smiled.

"But yeah, a few of them do come up and ask for a bit of advice now and then."

Smith said a handful of his Caversham team-mates were close to his age but the majority were between 18 and 23.

They were smart enough not to call him "Granddad", he said.

"They're pretty respectful, actually. When you've been around a certain length of time, the young guys seem to be nice to you. They probably have a name or two for me but I don't know them.

"It's been good for me. It keeps me enthusiastic and you have some good banter with the young guys.

"I always wanted to play as long as I could. Hopefully, I've got a few years left in me yet."

Smith said Caversham, Chatham Cup semifinalist in both 2006 and 2007, was confident of progressing further in the tournament.

The Auckland-based Three Kings side was "a bit of an unknown" but Smith was sure Caversham coach Steve Fleming would have done his homework.

"It can be a bit tricky when you're playing against a side that you don't know much about.

"But you can't do much. Steve always drills into us that we should worry about our own game and let the other team worry about us."

Smith said Caversham had built a team with a good mix of ages and backgrounds.

The club backed its passing ability and liked to play constructive football.

He knows all about the pressures of the Chatham Cup, having been in Caversham teams knocked out (twice) at the semifinal stage by Wellington club Western Suburbs.

He also has a winner's medal from 1999, having played the last 20 minutes in former club Dunedin Technical's win against Waitakere City.

"I'd love to get back to the final. It's probably my main motivation for playing premier football."

Smith, who has played for Otago United for the last two seasons, has been slowed by a minor ankle injury but expects to be fine for tomorrow's game.
