Football: Howieson's stocks going up, like Burnley

Former Mosgiel striker Cameron Howieson has just had a dream week in his football career.

Howieson, who attended Otago Boys' High School and also played for Mosgiel in the Football South premier league, played for the All Whites last month in their international against Japan.

But back at his English professional club, Burnley, Howieson has made a couple of big moves in his career.

Firstly, the 19-year-old, who has been at Burnley for more than two years, the last year as a professional, was offered a new one-year contract by the club last week.

Then, yesterday, Burnley won promotion to the Premier League, with a 2-0 victory at home over Wigan.

The victory means Burnley cannot be caught for second place in the Championship, and with it the automatic promotion to the riches of the Premier League.

Howieson did not play in yesterday's victory - he has played for the reserves and youth team for the majority of the year - but has still impressed manager Sean Dyche enough to be offered another year's contract.

Howieson, a left winger or midfielder, attended the Asia Pacific Football Academy in Lincoln for about a year, before moving overseas.

He impressed at the World under-17 championships in Mexico and was snapped up by Burnley.

He will now have his chance to next year crack the first team and with it the opportunity to play against mighty sides such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal in the Premier League.

Burnley was last in the top tier of English football in 2009, although the side only stayed up for one year.

A dreadful second half of the season sent it straight back down to the Championship.

First-half goals from Ashley Barnes and Michael Kightly yesterday were enough for the Clarets to join Leicester City in the top-flight next season.

Fans invaded the pitch to celebrate after the final whistle, while Dyche was lifted into the air by jubilant players who embarked on a lap of honour.

''We were intent on getting promoted ourselves, not having to rely on anyone else for help. It's getting harder to win automatic promotion to the Premier League because of all the constraints on teams like ourselves. I'm extremely proud,'' Dyche told the BBC.

Burnley striker Danny Ings, who has formed a formidable partnership with Sam Vokes this season, with the pair scoring 20 league goals apiece, added: ''I'm so proud of all the lads. From pre-season to now they have been absolutely fantastic.

''Sam Vokes has been top class this year. It was a shame he was not out on the pitch today, but he deserves it. People did not back us at the start of the season, but it's been great to prove them wrong.''

Burnley can again look forward to visiting venues like Old Trafford and Anfield next season after reaching 89 points from 44 games, four behind leader Leicester, which has played one game fewer and looks like being promoted as champion.

Derby County (81), Queens Park Rangers (76), Wigan (70) and Brighton & Hove Albion (66) occupy the playoff places.
