Sunday's A-League match between the Brisbane Roar and Wellington Phoenix's will not be held at Suncorp Stadium after rising floodwaters and a minor electrical fire today closed Queensland's premier football venue indefinitely.
The playing surface was submerged as the Brisbane River continues to inundate city suburbs while a fire, caused when flood waters short circuited a power generator, has also contributed to the 52,500-seat stadium closing.
Football Federation Australia officials were considering contingency plans for the round 23 fixture between the competition leaders and seventh-placed New Zealand franchise.
Due to the congested nature of the A-League schedule a month out from the play-offs, there is potential for the match to go ahead at a different venue than being postponed.
Another venue is Queensland was being sought, while the game might also be moved to Wellington or called off and the points shared - a positive result for the Phoenix given their poor away record.
Receiving a point for a "draw" would enable the Phoenix to draw level with sixth-placed Newcastle, who currently occupy the final play-off berth, on 31 points although the latter has a superior goal difference and a game in hand.
A decision is expected later today
Brisbane, nine points clear of second-placed Adelaide, were to play the Central Coast Mariners in Gosford tonight despite Roar players being fearful of the drama unfolding in their city.
Although the sun was shining in Brisbane today, the floodwaters are not expected to peak until early tomorrow morning.
