Dunedin could soon be the adopted home of the Champions League winners.
The women’s final between Barcelona and Wolfsburg kicks off in Eindhoven tomorrow morning (New Zealand time).
The park will be packed with superstar players from the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Spain and Switzerland — all countries that will be based in New Zealand for the Fifa Women’s World Cup, which begins next month.
The Swiss chose Dunedin early on as their base for the tournament — they are playing two games at Forsyth Barr Stadium — so all Otago eyes will be on their adopted daughter, Swiss captain Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic, who will draw on her 133 international caps to help get Barcelona across the line.
There are also players to keep an eye on the other side of the park, as Wolfsburg sports three Dutch stars, who will also play two games in Dunedin.
Dutch striker Jill Roord, who has played 86 games for her country, will be key for Wolfsburg, as will 96-cap centre back Dominique Janssen and young right back Lynn Wilms.
Dunedin will host six World Cup games — the only games in the South Island — featuring Switzerland, the Philippines, the Netherlands, Portugal, Japan, Costa Rica, Argentina, South Africa and Vietnam.
The Football Ferns will play Switzerland in Dunedin on July 30.
