Former Dunedin-based track rider Katie Schofield is not giving up her Olympic dream just yet.

The 31-year-old sprinter missed out on a place in the New Zealand team for the track world championships in London.

With just over 150 days until the Rio Olympics get under way, Schofield's prospects of representing her country in Brazil have perhaps diminished.

But she is determined to keep pushing for a berth.

She has fought her way back from disappointments in the past and hopes a new approach to her training will help produce better results.

She described the past few months as a "disheartening'' time.

"It has been disappointing and there really isn't much else to say other than I'm trying to refocus to try to make the team for Rio,'' she said when contacted for comment.

"That door has not been shut on me yet. I still have some time to prove to myself and the cycling New Zealand team that I should be a part of it.''

Schofield said she had not been able to make the gains she had hoped but had given her training regime a "rethink''.

"I guess I don't want to give away too much but I am doing things differently from what I was doing.''

Schofield took a two-week break to refresh and returned to training this week with a positive mind-set.

"Sport is pretty brutal but I guess that is what it is. If you are not performing, then you are not performing.

"I can understand the selectors making the tough calls but it does create a lot of doubt. You ask yourself, is this the end of the road, but I've done it before and I know I can do it again.

"I was kicked out of the [national cycling] programme but was able to get myself back into the programme.

"I'm not in that position again. I've still got the full support of Cycling New Zealand and a really good team behind me so I know I can make the gains needed.''
