There is a second Cumming making a name for himself at the South Island Primary Schools Cricket Tournament in Timaru this week.

Thirteen-year-old opening batsman Jacob Cumming scored an undefeated century for Dunedin on Tuesday.

Twenty-eight years earlier Jacob's dad, former Black Cap and Otago captain Craig Cumming, was honing his own skills at the tournament.

Craig played in the tournament for South Canterbury in 1988 and again in 1989. In that second season he scored three hundreds, which is still a tournament record.

Jacob's undefeated 106 came on day two of the tournament and helped Dunedin post 195 for four declared in a drawn match with Nelson.

On Monday, he helped Dunedin secure a first-innings win against Marlborough with a fine knock of 61. But he had to share the limelight with Xavier Chisholm, who retired on 105. The pair put on 162 for the first wicket.

Jacob's younger brother Zac Cumming (11) is also in the Dunedin side and bowled three consecutive maidens in the drawn match against Nelson. That was fine effort, considering the part-time leg spinner is in the side as a wicketkeeper.

Both Cumming boys got their start in cricket on the sidelines at the University Oval while their father was forging an impressive first-class career for Otago.

In 95 games for the province, Craig scored a record 6589 runs at an average of 43.34. He also holds the record for the most centuries for Otago with 21 - four more than the peerless Bert Sutcliffe managed.

The 41-year-old, who helps coach the Dunedin team, also represented New Zealand. He played 11 tests and 13 ODIs.

Teams from North Otago and Otago Country are also contesting the tournament.

North Otago posted 149 for nine in a drawn match with Nelson on the opening day. Jack Cameron was the standout with four for 44.

On Tuesday, Aaron Maxwell top-scored with 79 to help North Otago reach 181 for nine in a drawn match with Invercargill Metro.

Otago Country suffered a first-innings loss to Southland Country on Monday but held on for a draw against South Canterbury, thanks to a dogged 24 not out from 92 deliveries by Fletcher Marshall.
