Volts v Stags abandoned; Smith stars for Firebirds

Otago's one-dayer against Central Districts in Dunedin yesterday was abandoned without a ball bowled due to poor weather.

The teams are scheduled to play at the same venue tomorrow and the weather looks more promising.

Conditions were more conducive to cricket at the Basin Reserve, where former Otago all-rounder Nathan Smith helped steer the home side to a three-wicket win against Canterbury.

The visitor posted 218 for eight, thanks to 99 from Chad Bowes.

Wellington appeared to be steam rolling to victory, with Finn Allen (68) and Rachin Ravindra (34) putting on 90 for the opening wicket.

But the home side lost three quick wickets before recovering. Smith stroked 43 not out from 33 balls and combined with Logan van Beek (24 not out) to put on an unbroken stand of 56 for the eighth wicket.

Auckland finally got its Plunket Shield campaign under way yesterday. Covid-19 restrictions meant the Aces missed the early part of the first-class season but the team made a bright start against Northern Districts.

Left arm seamer Ross ter Braak and spinner Will Somerville picked up three wickets apiece to help dismiss Northern for 230. Glenn Phillips also picked up a couple of cheeky wickets at the end.

The score would have been a lot lower had it not been for fighting half centuries from Mitchell Santner (59) and Brett Randell (51).

In reply Auckland was 32 for none at stumps.
