Otago faced with declaring well behind

Otago is going to have to get creative in its Plunket Shield match against Auckland at Queens Park today.

The Volts will resume this morning on 39 for one in reply to Auckland's tally of 351 for eight declared.

A combination of rain and poor drainage has robbed the match of plenty of cricket across the opening two days.

That has left precious little wriggle room but you sense an ambitious declaration in the making.

Otago has to play for the 12 points on offer for an outright win and that will probably mean declaring well behind.

Auckland is in desperate need of points as well because Canterbury enjoys such a healthy lead at the top of the competition standings.

It might be the perfect recipe for an exciting final day if the weather plays its part.

Play did not get under way until 3.30pm yesterday, rain and a damp outfield being the culprits.

Auckland resumed on 273 for six with Robbie O'Donnell closing in on his third first-class century.

The 26-year-old right-hander punched a drive down the ground to bring up the milestone. He was eventually run out for 128.

Auckland did not bat on for too long. As soon as the visiting side picked up a fourth batting bonus point it declared.

Otago's first task was to get to stumps without losing a wicket. But former Otago off-spinner Will Somerville got the important breakthrough for the Aces.

He trapped Anaru Kitchen lbw for 13. The Volts got through the rest of the abbreviated day without further damage.

In Mt Manganui, Wellington is 282 for five in reply to Northern Districts tally of 246 at stumps on day two.

In Rangiora, Canterbury rolled Central Districts for 149.
