Its four-game winning streak came to an end against Canterbury in the afternoon game yesterday, but Otago dominated its earlier twenty20 match against Auckland.
Mitch Renwick slapped an unbeaten 70 from 52 balls to help his side post 172 for six.It was Renwick’s third half-century of the series. The wicketkeeper-batsman was a solid performer for Otago at the top of the one-day order and continues to press for a spot in the Volts’ T20 line-up.
With Neil Broom sidelined with a fractured bone in his hand, there is a contestable spot.
Left-arm spinner Ben Lockrose produced another fine spell. He took two for 18 from three overs to help restrict Auckland to 139 for eight, while Travis Muller (two for 13) and Jack Hunter (one for 18) also shone.
Canterbury’s Ken McClure whacked 69 from 47 to help his side reach an imposing 175 for four in the late game.
Otago slumped to 102 for eight in reply. But Hunter Kindley continued to believe, and his 66 from 49 gave his side some late hope.
But the chase faltered and Otago was dismissed for 153. Spinner Theo van Woerkom took five for 20 to sink Otago.
