Otago’s Heal, Campbell awarded life membership by NZC

Otago cricket identity Stuart Heal and former Otago spinner Catherine Campbell have been made life members of New Zealand Cricket.

Former New Zealand players Geoff Allott and Bruce Edgar and administrator Liz Dawson were also afforded the honour at the body’s annual meeting.

Heal was chairman of New Zealand Cricket from 2013 to 2016 and oversaw the successful co-hosting of the Cricket World Cup in 2015.

He is the president of the Otago Cricket Association and also a former director and chairman of the provincial association .

Heal received the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to cricket and the community.

Campbell played nine tests and 85 ODIs for her country.

The offspinner played in three World Cups, including the successful campaign in 2000. She has worked for NZC since 1997 and has been NZC's long-serving representative on the ICC Women's Committee.

Campbell started out her provincial career with Otago and played seven first-class and eight one-day games from 1979 to 1982.

Former New Zealand cricketers Nathan Astle, Penny Kinsella, Craig McMillan and Haidee Tiffen were made honorary members.

Former New Zealand cricketer and double international Lesley Murdoch was elected president of NZC at the annual meeting.

Murdoch is the second woman to fill the role, and follows outgoing president Debbie Hockley.

She played six tests and 25 ODIs for New Zealand and also represented her country in hockey at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

She has been NZC’s vice-president for the past year.

New director Sarah Beaman was elected to the board. She takes the spot vacated by the retirement of Jackie Lloyd.

NZC announced a surplus of $792,000 for the 2021-22 year against a budgeted loss of $3.6 million, demonstrating its commercial resilience during a period of ongoing uncertainty, caused chiefly by the Covid pandemic.
