The team was presented with the Bing Harris Shield on Saturday after it convincingly won the title for the best side across all formats in the Dunedin senior club grade.
It is the seventh time in 10 years the club has won the shield. It scored 277 points, ahead of Albion on 218, which tied with Carisbrook Dunedin. North East Valley tallied 206 points, defending champion Kaikorai was on 167 and Taieri 132 points.
Green Island is a side of mostly veterans with just a few youngsters playing.
Green Island coach Alun Kennedy said the team’s experience was a vital component of their success.
"Whenever things get a bit tough and tight, then the guys have that experience to call on. They’ve been there before so know what to do," he said.
"We’ve got a group of guys who have probably 1000 caps between them and they really enjoy their cricket. We’re trying to bring in a few young guys from high school who can become key players when they guys do decide to move on."
He said veteran players such as Dion Lobb, Mark Joyce and Ant Harris were still enjoying it, so would most probably keep playing.
Batsman Harris indicated last year he was going to stop playing, but he had come back and been among the runs, scoring a century last week and recording a good score again on Saturday. Lobb has once again been to the fore in the bowling department, with more than 50 wickets to his name for the season.
