Cricket: Wells century stands out as bowlers call the shots

Sam Wells provided a rare highlight with the bat as the latest round of Dunedin senior club cricket was again dominated by the bowlers on Saturday.

Wells top-scored for the round with a classy 113 as University-Grange beat Carisbrook-Dunedin, with no other batsman in the game reaching 40.

There was a one-sided victory at Logan Park, where Albion romped home by nine wickets after bowling North East Valley out for just 55.

Runs were also at a premium at Sunnyvale, where home side Green Island folded for 124 but then bowled Taieri out for 87.

Pelichet Bay was unable to field a team for a second straight week and had to default to Kaikorai.

University-Grange 246 beat Carisbrook-Dunedin 164 by 82 runs

Wells showed the benefit of his time at the top domestic level as he produced a fine all-round performance to lead his University-Grange side to a comfortable win at Tonga Park.

The part-time Otago all-rounder smashed 10 fours and five sixes in his fine innings of 113, adding 72 for the sixth wicket with Ash Simpson (24) and 47 for the 10th wicket with Tim O'Sullivan (four not out).

Wells' knock was even more meritorious as most of his team-mates struggled against the legspin of in-form bowler Rhys Phillips.

The right-handed spinner has been in excellent form this season and bowled 28 unbroken overs on Saturday, finishing with six for 103.

Carisbrook-Dunedin's reply never got going, with only Phillips (38), Tony McEntyre (34) and Nick Eathorne (21) even getting starts.

Wells had a handy spell, taking three for 43, but the best University-Grange bowler was another legspinner, Mayank Patel, who had 5 for 53 off his 12 overs.

North East Valley 55 lost to Albion 58 for one by nine wickets

They call it one-day cricket but this mismatch was all over before 1pm.

Four batsmen were dismissed for ducks as North East Valley ensured everyone would get an early lunch with an abject batting display at Logan Park.

Scott Badger scored a game 25 opening the innings but the next highest contribution was from extras (13) as the Valley innings ended inside 22 overs.

Jeremy Medlin (four for 13) paced a balanced Albion bowling attack with Nick Cape, Sam Jones and Craig Souter all getting two wickets.

With swing-happy opener Shaun Haig at the top of the order, Albion's reply was never going to be a measured affair.

Haig swiped eight boundaries in his unbeaten 40 as Albion took just 34min to win by nine wickets.

Green Island 124 beat Taieri 87 by 37 runs

Dion Lobb marked his 199th game for Green Island with a six-wicket bag as his side managed to defend a weak total at Sunnyvale.

Lobb, the veteran medium-pacer who has outlasted a lot of players on the Dunedin scene, had six for 33 as Taieri was skittled for just 87 in 28 overs.

Russell Ritchie added three wickets, with six Taieri batsmen getting into double figures but none able to pass 20.

Earlier, Green Island had its own batting worries as it slumped from 53 for one to 86 for five.

There was the briefest of recoveries before the home side lost its final five wickets for three runs.

Ben Frost led the Taieri attack with four for 15 off 4.1 overs.
