Cricket: Substitute in good touch

Michael Rae (17) is still at school but he already has a good story to tell the grandchildren one day.

The year 12 John McGlashan College pupil took three catches for the New Zealand XI to help dismiss England for 426 in the tour match at the Queenstown Events Centre.

At 2m and 100kg, he is big lad and a promising quick bowler, who is a member of the New Zealand and Otago under-19 teams.

He has been whistled in to do some substitute fielding during the game and proved his worth with a safe pair of hands.

The first two catches were simple but the last, to dismiss century-maker Ian Bell, was a beauty.

He ran backwards and, with the burning sun in his eyes, took the catch with both hands high above his head.

''My heart was in my mouth a bit,'' he said.

''I just kept my eyes on the ball the whole time, until it went over my head.''
