Cricket: Stuart Broad out of Ashes

England bowler Stuart Broad will miss the rest of the Ashes series with a torn abdominal muscle.

The English Cricket Board confirmed on Tuesday the fast bowler will play no part in the final three tests nor the one day international series in Australia that follows.

Broad bowled before and after lunch on the fourth day of the second test in Adelaide on Monday, but left the field in the afternoon due to the injury. England will field a replacement fielder for the final day of the test.

"Playing for England in an Ashes series in Australia has been something I've dreamed of for a long time so to have that cut short by injury is devastating," Broad said.

"So far the series has been everything I had anticipated and knowing I'll play no further part is quite hard to take. Given the way we had started the series I was looking forward to playing a leading role in England retaining the Ashes but that's not to be."

Broad said he would now focus on regaining full fitness in time for the Cricket World Cup, which begins 19 Feb. and will be played in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

England's medical staff are confident the 24-year-old bowler will be fit for the tournament.

"Stuart will return to England shortly to commence a rehabilitation programme and we expect him to make a full recovery in time for the World Cup next year," England Chief Medical Officer Dr Nick Peirce said.

Broad's injury will mean that Chris Tremlett, Ajmal Shahzad or Tim Bresnan are likely to be selected for the third test which begins in Perth on 16 December.
