Cricket: Ranks of pace bowlers bolstered

Anthony Bullick and James McMillan have picked up the remaining two contracts for the Otago side this season, as the side looks to build up it pace bowling stocks.

Both have been in and out of the Otago team over the past few seasons but coach Vaughn Johnson said the final two places were always going to go to bowlers.

"History tells us we need to be a little bit careful with injuries to pace bowlers and both Anthony and James have had their fair share of injuries over time," Johnson said.

Bullick (26) had been hampered by a groin injury last season and ended up having surgery.

Johnson said the surgeon who operated on Bullick had given him a clearance to return to training.

Johnson acknowledged McMillan also had a fair number of injuries over his career, but that was understandable as he put a lot of pressure on his body because of his action.

"But he had a particularly good year last year, and was effective in the twenty/20."

Bullick made his debut for Otago in November, 2007 and in eight matches has taken 13 wickets.

McMillan (33) made his debut for Otago in 2000. He will no doubt celebrate when he takes his first wicket for Otago this season in a first-class match, as he has 99 wickets for Otago at first-class level.

Otago had two contracts to announce yesterday after leaving a space open when the initial contracts were named, and then Bradley Scott withdrew from his contract and decided to stay with Northern Districts.

Former Otago player Greg Todd has left Auckland and linked up with Central Districts, the team he first played for.
