Dion Lobb has just picked up his 400th senior wicket for his club side.

Not a bad effort considering he never played for his school First XI.

Lobb (29) bagged his 400th scalp on Saturday when he had Jesse Simpson caught behind in Green Island's loss to University-Grange.

Though it is a hefty total, Lobb is still more than 200 wickets behind left-armer Grant Payne for leading wicket-taker for his club.

But it is still a handy effort for the right-arm medium-pacer, who aims to continue playing for a few years yet.

"I've never really had any injuries which has really helped.

I'm definitely bowling a lot slower than I used to but I've got a bit wiser, a bit craftier," he said.

"We have a guy at Green Island, Jeremy Scott, who has always kept the stats and that keeps you playing, knowing things to aim for."

Lobb played one first-class game for Otago in 2007, taking one wicket in a rain-shortened game against Auckland.

But he is not disappointed in not playing more for Otago as "there were much better bowlers around and I was probably a yard too slow".

Lobb never made the First XI at Kavanagh College, preferring to go and play for Green Island, when he could not trial for the top side at the school while only a year 9 pupil.

He made his debut for the senior side in 1997-98 and said it was the good times at the club that have kept him there.

"I think going out there early really helped me as I got to play with some really tough, hardened cricketers.

They really taught me a lot about the game.

"I've had a lot of success - won seven club titles and national titles.

Plus, a lot of the guys and their wives, we really get on well together and have a lot of fun."
