Cricket: Easy win for Otago Country

Otago Country 259/3 beat Carisbrook-Dunedin 153 by 106 runs.

The Country boys completed a comprehensive smash-and-grab mission at Ocean Grove, with two centuries, a four-wicket bag and a crushing win in the Dunedin senior match on Saturday.

Otago Country's total was built almost entirely around an unbeaten partnership of 174 for the fourth wicket between Jono Homer and Cam Rutherford.

The pair came together at 85 for three and were still at the crease after 50 overs.

Homer, who was on the fringes of the Otago squad a few seasons ago, cracked 115 not out, while rising star Cam Rutherford was unbeaten on 104.

Rutherford then showed his ability with the ball, snaring four cheap wickets as he mopped up the Carisbrook-Dunedin tail inside 35 overs.

CD had crumbled to 69 for five, with only Tom Hills (46), Rhys Phillips (36) and James Hogg (26) making scores of note.

Kaikorai 250 lost to Uni-Grange 254/2 by eight wickets
University-Grange wheeled out the big guns to comfortably chase down Kaikorai's target at Bayfield.

Otago Volts openers Aaron Redmond and Michael Bracewell combined for an opening stand of 105 to ensure the job was half done.

Redmond cracked 64 off 60 balls and Bracewell contributed 33 off 46.

The openers were dismissed within three overs of each other, but there was no respite for Kaikorai, with Jesse Simpson (50 not out off 75) and Otago all-rounder Sam Wells (80 not out off 77) combining in a match-winning unbeaten partnership of 144.

Only Scott Hawkins (two for 49 off 10) profited among the Kaikorai bowlers.

Earlier, Tim Muir had top-scored for Kaikorai with a good knock of 60 off 65 balls.

He had support from Geordie Scott (49) but no other batsman passed 30.

Mitch Rutherford (three for 44), David Goddard (two for 22) and Redmond (two for 28) led the University-Grange attack.

Albion 311/9 beat Green Island 177 by 134 runs
It was all about balance for Albion, which got meaningful contributions from severalbatsmen and bowlers in its big win over defending champion at Culling Park.

First, Jamie Glenn (53) and Mark Craig (46) combined in a second-wicket partnership of precisely 100.

Neil Wagner (39), Nick Beard (54), Ollie Newton (35) and Blair Brown (29) then all chipped in as Albion became the first club of the season to pass 300.

Green Island stalwart Dion Lobb added three wickets to his bulging career tally but went for plenty of runs.

Albion then cleaned up Green Island inside 40 overs, with Newton taking three wickets and Paddy Cairns, Beard and Craig a pair each.

Scott Simpson (58) and Mark Joyce (35) were the lone Island batsman to flourish.

North East Valley v Taieri abandoned
The match at the Oval was abandoned because of a slippery artificial pitch and run-ups.
