Wicketkeeper Derek de Boorder was the big winner at the Otago cricket awards yesterday.

The 25-year-old picked up three awards, scooping the batsman, fielder and player of the year honours.

De Boorder's progress with the gloves has been noted, with coach Mike Hesson suggesting he can not be far off being selected for the national side. But his improvement with the bat has been just as impressive.

De Boorder posted his maiden first-class hundred with an undefeated innings of 119 against Northern Districts in Hamilton last month and celebrated with another in the following match.

The right-hander scored 667 runs at an average of 66.70 and took 29 catches and a stumping.

Only captain Craig Cumming (714) scored more runs for Otago in the Plunket Shield this season.

De Boorder was also in fine touch during the one-day tournament with 274 runs at 68.50.

There was some stiff competition for the player of the year award, particularly from Neil Wagner.

The strike bowler had a brilliant Plunket Shield campaign with 51 wickets at 18.15 and stole the limelight when he took five wickets in one over, a world record in first-class cricket.

He won the bowler of the year award and also claimed a special award for the most outstanding individual performance of the season.

Classy all-rounder Suzie Bates took the top award for the Sparks and also picked up the batsman of the year award.

Natasha Miles and Tanya Morrison shared the bowler of the year award and wicketkeeper Katey Martin claimed the fielder of the year award.

Special presentations were made to Sarah Tsukigawa and Clare Taylor, who have retired, and Cumming, for his achievement of passing Bert Sutcliffe's record haul of centuries for Otago and captaining the province for the last 10 years.
