Cricket: Aberhart: NZ plays it safe with captaincy

Reasonable, conservative, safe. Not a glowing endorsement perhaps, but former New Zealand coach Denis Aberhart believes Ross Taylor has the potential to be a really good captain.

New Zealand Cricket's decision to appoint Taylor as captain ahead of Brendon McCullum was a choice between two contrasting styles - McCullum's aggression and flair and Taylor's more conservative approach.

And it is a decision which has polarised the cricket community.

Former New Zealand batsman Martin Crowe has been one of Taylor's high-profile backers while McCullum is thought to have plenty of support among the players, including former captain Daniel Vettori.

Aberhart, however, would have been happy with either Taylor or McCullum assuming the reins.

"I think either of the two would have been a very good captain for New Zealand," Aberhart said.

"Brendon has great flair, great knowledge of the game and plenty of experience. And Ross has worked with the coach John Wright and I think what they've done is gone with the incumbent, in some ways.""Brendon would probably have taken more risks than Ross Taylor would but when we've seen Ross captain the side, he has done a reasonable job with his work on the field.""He was the caretaker captain whenever he has done the job but now it is his team and not Daniel Vettori's team.

"He has to lead that team and inspire that team, so that is what will be different. He will certainly take some time to settle into that. But the reality is he has been part of that team for a long time.

"I think what we have seen from him is that he has been proactive. But I think you'd see a little more aggression from Brendon, had he been made the captain.

"You'd see Brendon try and make things happen. He would have been a more high risk captain, maybe."
