Bowlers come to Green Island's rescue

Green Island 133 beat North East Valley 107

Green Island leaned on its experienced bowling unit to get out of a hole at Logan Park on Saturday.

The defending champion could only muster a paltry 133 against North East Valley.

It should not have been enough but it was, as Otago contracted player Christi Viljoen and pace bowler Blair Soper came to the rescue with four wickets each.

North East Valley put on 50 for the second wicket, and Adam Miles (37) and Hunter Kindley (29) seemed to have put their team on course for victory.

But Viljoen (four for 16) removed both batsmen and the rest of the order crumbled meekly to be all out for 107.

Soper, who has played 11 first-class games for Otago, claimed four for 17.

Earlier, Gregor Croudis top-scored for Green Island with 43, while Valley's Josiah Turner picked up a five-wicket bag when he ripped through the tail.

Kaikorai 177 beat Carisbrook-Dunedin 97

Otago all-rounder Josh Finnie smashed six sixes in a whirlwind innings of 78 to help Kaikorai beat Carisbrook-Dunedin at Tonga Park.

The bowlers dominating, so Finnie counterattacked with an audacious innings. He came to the wicket with his side 37 for two and lost seven batting partners during his 63-ball stay at the crease.

Finnie's aggressive style dragged Kaikorai through to what proved a winning total.

Nathan Smith was the pick of the Carisbrook-Dunedin bowlers with two for 33. He also top-scored with 18 in a dismal scoreboard for the home team. Openers Richard Sillars (13) and Camden Hawkins (15) were the only other players to register double figures.

Kaikorai's Robbie Brigham shone with the ball, taking four for 10, while Ryan Whelan grabbed three wickets but was expensive in the context of the game.

Albion 118 lost to Taieri 122 for eight

Taieri bowlers Warren Barnes and Brad Frost picked up three wickets apiece to help set up a two-wicket win against Albion in a low-scoring game at Brooklands Park.

Albion was dismissed for meagre 118 but Taieri limped to victory with Jarrod Casey posting a valuable 24 not out at No 7.

Barnes stormed in and took three for 24 from 10 overs. The Otago paceman struck first when he removed the dangerous Tayler Cumberland for five in the fifth over.

Frost returned even better figures with three for 15. He also picked up the key wicket of Josh Tasman-Jones for 23.

Josh Cuttance helped Albion get past 100 with 20 from 24 deliveries. While Albion only managed a miserly total, it bowled really well.

Otago contracted player Matt Bacon took three for 26 and Tasman Jones and Matt West picked up two wickets each.

Taieri eventually reached its target in the 47th over. Jack Hunter's innings of 31 from 82 proved decisive.
