Win the game first, chase the margin required if the opportunity is there.

That is the approach the Otago Gold Rush is taking into its final women's basketball championship regular-season match.

It hosts the Harbour Breeze at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin at 3pm tomorrow.

A playoff spot remains possible, although it is a long shot.

The Gold Rush needs to win by 38 points or more, while also relying on Harbour losing to Canterbury tonight.

Having won three of its last four games, a win would not be out of the question for the Gold Rush.

However, doing so by that margin would be a big effort.

For coach Greg Brockbank, the primary focus did not change.

"There's been a little bit of talk about the points differential needed, but in all honesty you go out there and approach the game the same way.

"You try to win the game and then if the opportunity arises [to win by the 38] you take it.

"I think focusing on playing well will hold us in better stead to achieving that."

The team had a tough outing against Harbour in its last meeting, an 85-47 loss during its opening weekend tournament.

It has improved since then.

Scoring and turnovers have become far less of a problem.

That has produced the right results, notably two weeks ago when the side turned a 37-point loss against Auckland into a win at home.

Brockbank felt while the side had improved, confidence had been key and it was now playing in a manner it had always been capable of.

Despite that, he did admit the loss last time might provide some extra motivation.

"Every game's an opportunity to show we're getting better.

"But we feel like we weren't playing the way we could have been at the start of the season.

"Harbour definitely gave us a tickle-up in that first round, so there will be plenty of extra motivation for the girls, regardless of what it means for our season."

The side would be without experience in captain Natalie Smith and guard Soraya Umaga-Jensen.

If it does not make the top four it will play off with Taranaki and the top two teams from division two at next weekend's finals in Christchurch.
