Pavihi shines as Magic notch third successive win

Take the title of form team and put it firmly next to the South Pac Magic's name.

A rampant finish to the second quarter spurred them to a 92-80 win over the Andy Bay Falcons on Tuesday night.

The result avenged their week-one loss to the Falcons, and notched a third consecutive win, beating all three other teams in Dunedin women's club basketball in the process.

Tia Pavihi continued her strong run of form, leading the Magic with 25 points and providing key points in the early stages.

It leaves last year's most valuable player second on the league's scoring list, her 28 points per game only 0.75 behind Ajax's Elise Gilbert.

Trailing that duo in third is Falcons guard Alexa Duff, who was her usual classy self with 32 points, while also being a menace in the passing lanes to pick up 10 steals.

And in the early stages it was those two who went back and forward.

Duff's shooting range was on full display, as she scored eight of the Falcons' first 10 points, before assisting on the next basket to Elise Carline (15 points).

But Pavihi had an answer for everything, her ability to both get to the hoop and score from deep evident throughout.

Shanti Kara chipped in with a couple of baskets late in the quarter, helping the Magic to a 20-15 quarter-time lead.

They continued going back and forward for much of the second quarter, before the Magic made their run just before halftime.

Pavihi and Dayna Turnbull hit back-to-back three-pointers to extend the lead to double-digits.

That run was continued as Pavihi, Sereana Rokotokala (23 points) and Maggie Manson (15 points) added baskets at the hoop to make it 49-32.

It was a run the Falcons could not recover from.

They tried to hit back after the break, but Rokotokala's quality inside came to the fore.

The Magic forward took control of the game, posting 15 points in a dominant third quarter to hold of the Falcons' push.

That took the three-quarter time score to 66-53, a double-digit lead the Magic would hold for the rest of the game.

In the other game, Ajax bounced back from last week's loss to the Magic with a 66-53 win over over Varsity.

Gilbert had 28 points to continue her rich form, while Legacy Harrison led Varsity with 15 points.
