For the second time this season, the Mid City Magic has edged the St Kilda Saints in an overtime thriller.

The defending champion trailed by 18 points at halftime, but rallied to finish the stronger team, running out a 87-80 winner on Saturday to remain unbeaten.

It was one of three close games in a a very even Dunedin club competition.

While being undefeated, the Magic has been pushed very close in four of its six wins.

That was evident as the Saints held it to 27 first-half points on Saturday while St Kilda used its range of threats to pile on 45 itself to be  in complete control at halftime.

At that point, the Magic began its comeback.

Josh Aitcheson, making his first appearance of the season, showed why he was snapped up by the NBL’s Canterbury Rams.

He led the comeback with 13 of his team’s 27 points in the third quarter, helping the Magic get its scoring going.

James Ross matched Aitcheson with 13 points for the Saints, but they managed only four others.

That left the score at 62-54 at the end of the third and the Magic continued its fightback in a tense fourth quarter.

It held the Saints to 13 fourth-quarter points, scrapping hard and edging its way back to force overtime at 75-75.

The momentum was with the Magic by that point. It held a slim lead for most of the extra period, before opening up a gap late to escape with another win.

The side has now won 24 of its past 25 games dating back to the start of last season.

Aitcheson finished with 31 points for the Magic, while Benoit Hayman added 20.

Ross top-scored for the Saints with 32.

The Magic Lions followed that up with their first win of the season, beating the Andy Bay Falcons 80-78 in another thriller.

Promising Otago Boys’ High School duo Nathan Hanna and Tai Porima-Flavell played starring roles, scoring 26 and 20 points respectively.

The Falcons struggled to get their offence going, relying largely on outside shooting to stay in touch.

They did that well enough to be tied at 78-78 heading into the dying seconds.

However, Lions guard Lee Devereux found his way to the line with three seconds to go and clunked in two free throws to claim the win.In the late game, Varsity threatened to upset the City Rise Bombers, although came up just short.

The Bombers led 60-59 going in to the final quarter, but Varsity managed just seven points while Olly Smith nailed four three-pointers in the fourth to take a 76-66 win.
