For a while it seemed as though the Mid City Magic could not miss.

A barrage of early shooting helped it claim a 91-79 win over the St Kilda Saints in Saturday's men's club basketball top-of-the-table clash.

Josh Aitcheson hit eight three-pointers — including a four-point play — to score 25 points himself in the first quarter.

The Otago Nugget was deadly when left open, but even with a hand in his face he did not look like missing.

He helped the Magic to a 37-21 lead at the end of the first quarter — Richie Rodger and Joe Ahie also chipped in to give the team 10 three-pointers in the quarter.

While Aitcheson (28 points) slowed down after that, the rest of the Magic stepped up through the second quarter.

Rodger (16 points) took control with some sublime passes, while Ahie (16 points) and Matt Dukes (eight points) did damage from deep.

They helped the Magic to a 61-42 halftime lead, an impressive total given the Saints' average points conceded in an entire game had been 65 prior to Saturday.

But the Saints, who were without key guards James Ross and Michael Ruske, kept battling.

They held the Magic to 30 points in the second half and kept their own score ticking over.

Big man Lawson Morris-Whyte scored both inside and out to put up 25 points, while Jamie MacDonald chimed in with 17.

But while they remained in touch, the Saints never got close enough to truly threaten the lead.

Rodger came up with several key baskets down the stretch, allowing the Magic to remain in control to the end.

The Magic Lions and Andy Bay Falcons both moved to five wins, creating a three-way tie for third place with the City Rise Bombers.

Centre Sam Timmins, playing his first game in the league since leaving for the University of Washington in 2015, provided a huge addition to the Lions.

He had 36 points, including four three-pointers, and blocked a multitude of shots as the Lions beat the Bombers 99-75.

Tom Cowie top-scored for the Bombers with 17 points, while Joe McAuley also had a handy game for the Lions with 18.

The Andy Bay Falcons held off a mid-game comeback, before pulling away to win 96-78 over Varsity.

Emerson Watson led the Falcons with 17 points, while Varsity's Joseph Euphrat dropped 33 in another impressive scoring outing.
