Case of what a difference a day makes for Nuggets

If ever an example of Sam Timmins' value was needed, this was it.

The Otago Nuggets centre delivered a monster performance to help the side to an overtime win on Saturday night.

A day later he was sidelined with a knee injury and the side was thrashed by a far weaker team, on paper at least.

It left the Nuggets to split their first away double-header of the season and moved them to three wins from five games.

A 92-85 overtime victory over the Manawatu Jets on Saturday was followed by a 91-62 loss to Taranaki.

Timmins posted 29 points, 25 rebounds and three assists — and he was probably robbed of three or four more by the statistics crew — on Saturday.

Only once has a Nugget pulled down more rebounds, Miles Pearce grabbing 28 in a triple overtime game against the Jets in 2006.

The Nuggets held a comfortable buffer most of the first three quarters and point guard Richie Rodger (16 points) was influential early.

However, the Jets went on a fourth-quarter run to pull in the deficit and take back the lead.

They were ahead 80-74 with a minute and a-half remaining, the Nuggets struggling to score.

Timmins closed that gap to four, before throwing one of several brilliant outlet passes to allow Geremy McKay to score a transition lay-up — closing the gap to two with a minute left.

McKay took a crucial charge a possession later, before Timmins hit a cutting Isaiah Moss (19 points), whose lay-up beat the buzzer and forced overtime.

Timmins went down with his injury early in overtime, although returned, and from there it was all Nuggets.

Moss — who had been off from deep all night — hit a big three-pointer, before Timmins’ dominance got the Nuggets over the line.

Last night could not have been more different.

Timmins' absence left it without a key offensive force and it struggled to generate scoring, while turning over too much ball.

Forward Akiva McBirney-Griffen, who came into the starting line-up for Timmins, stepped up with 23 points.

Aside from that it was bleak.

Moss managed the next most with 12 points, although managed just one of 10 from deep.

The Mountainairs were more energetic, while the Nuggets gave up far too many easy baskets.

The hosts took a 29-13 lead at the first break and while the Nuggets hit back in the second quarter, Taranaki was able to pull away as the Nuggets struggled to get anything going after halftime.

Marcel Jones had 25 points for the hosts, while Tai Wynyard chipped in with 18.
