From Dunedin club basketball to the New Zealand Breakers - Finn Delaney has done just that.
The 20-year-old made his Breakers debut in a 99-78 win against the Perth Wildcats in Auckland on Wednesday night.
With the game in the bag, the 1.98m tall forward played the last couple of minutes of the match, his first in the ANBL.
Delaney did not score in front of a packed crowd at the North Shore Events Centre, in stark contrast to the last time he played.
That was at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin a few months ago, when he helped the St Kilda Saints defend their men's A grade title with a 84-72 win against the Bombers in the final.
Delaney, who is originally from Nelson, scored 13 points in the match.
After playing a season for the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats in the NCAA second division in the United States last year, Delaney returned to New Zealand and played for the Nelson Giants in the NBL.
The commerce student moved to Dunedin in July to study in the second semester at the University of Otago, and first played for the Saints in an 81-59 win against the Bombers the same month.
He immediately impressed, scoring 12 points, including a thunderous dunk on the fast break.
Delaney, who trialled for the Tall Blacks earlier this year, was confirmed as one of four Breakers development players in August.
Development players are fulltime with the Breakers and train alongside the 10 contracted players.
Teams can name up to 12 players on the match-day roster for all home games.
