Basketball: Marshall takes new job

Basketball Otago stalwart Todd Marshall barely had a chance to get started as director of development before another job offer too good to turn down presented itself.

The former Nuggets coach accepted a Dunedin-based position with Sky about two or three weeks after he put his feet under a table at the BBO headquarters in mid-July.

Instead of growing the game of basketball he will be promoting Sky's digital package, Guest Select, in his new role as South Island business development manager.

While the opportunity proved attractive, it was still a wrench leaving BBO as he had been looking forward to helping promote the game at the grassroots level.

"It was pretty tough, actually," he said.

"But it was just one of those life decisions I had to make, unfortunately. In some ways, it was probably better it happened sooner rather than later, because you start to get into it and start thinking about what you could achieve."

Marshall plans to remain active within the basketball community and hoped to be re-elected as a board member at BBO's annual meeting last night.

He is one of five candidates vying for three remaining positions on the board. Ricky Carr, Angela Ruske and Gavin Briggs have been re-elected and Karl Andrews and Martin Jones elected.

Long-serving board member and former chairman John Gallaher has stood down, and Shane Atherton has moved out of the region and has also resigned.

Marshall had two three-year stints as Nuggets coach from 1998-2000 and 2002-04 and played an important role in helping resurrect the team after it spent the 2009 season on the sideline because of a lack of finances. He took over as the director of development from Casey Lockwood, who left the role to pursue her playing career.

Marshall's departure has opened the door for American point guard Scott O'Gallagher.

O'Gallagher played for the Otago Nuggets this season and expressed a desire to remain in the city if he could find employment. He has registered interest in applying for the director of development role.

Basketball Otago general manager Markham Brown said the position had been advertised and applications would close on September 9.

"We want to fill the position as soon as we can, really," Brown said.

"We've had some good people in the role but for various reasons they have moved on and we are wanting a bit more solidarity in the position now.

"We are really conscience of getting someone who will give us at least two years."

The successful applicant will oversee the age-group representative and youth development programmes and look for ways to develop the game in the Otago region.
