This season has just kept getting better for Josh Hou.

One of Otago's most promising runners, the 14-year-old year 11 John McGlashan College pupil has had a summer full of medals, personal bests and records.

The most recent of those came just last weekend.

He ran a time of 1min 58.56sec to break his own Otago men's-14 800m record and claim the Otago under-18 championship.

That followed an impressive 1500m earlier in the month, which he ran in 4min 11.52sec to break a 44-year-old Otago record by 4sec.

In addition, the Hill City-University runner claimed golds in the 800m, 1500m, 4x100m relay and medley relay at the Colgate Games, as well as bronze in the 400m.

At the end of last year, he won bronze in the 3000m in the junior grade of his first secondary school national championships.

On top of that he won the Ness Cup, an early season handicap race in Dunedin.

It is quite a list.

Having begun running as a year 8 pupil, he started training with a coach during cross-country season the next year.

Since then, he has gone from strength to strength, although he is not thinking too far ahead.

For now, he is happy running and seeing where it takes him.

He enjoys all three distances, the 800m, 1500m and 3000m.

However, there is plenty coming up in the short term.

Both the Otago and South Island secondary schools championships loom and represent major events at which he hopes to perform well.

He also has eyes on the national secondary school championships, to be held in Dunedin from November 30 to December 2.

There, he will compete in his last year as a junior, leaving him in a promising position, given this year's success.

As if that is not enough, Hou is also a more than handy basketball player.

He has played for both school and Otago age-group teams, although he will play for school only this year.

Running is his priority and, given his recent success, he may be a name to keep an eye on in the future.
