After a conservative start, Katie Morgan powered away in the final stages to win the 55km Three Peaks Mountain Challenge yesterday and with it the national Ultra Trail Running title.

Racing over the summits of Flagstaff and Swampy before heading over to Pulpit Rock and back over Mt Cargill, Morgan kept company with South African Ultra runner Naomi Brand and Dunedin's Margie Campbell over Flagstaff and Swampy before pulling away on the run to Pulpit Rock.

"I knew they weren't too far behind so I was just destroying my quads a bit to stay ahead of the game," she said.

She said that after finishing lame in the Old Ghost race on the West Coast, she was happy to finish in one piece.

Morgan (33), a recent inclusion on the Wanaka sporting scene and the current New Zealand Ultra Trail Champion, spent 12 days off following the Old Ghost run in late February and knew her fitness was going to be a bit lacking as she lined up for yesterday's 55km Three Peak event.

But any lapse in fitness was not apparent as she held her own against a strong group of female athletes, including Campbell and Brand, to cross over 6min clear in 5hr 48min 29sec

A desire not be drawn into anything but to just run her own race paid dividends for Margie Campbell, who finished second in 5hr 54min 53sec.

Brand was third in 5hr 59min 49sec

Ruth Croft joins an impressive list of athletic achievement from the Greymouth region with her victory in the open women's section of the 26km Three Peaks race in 2hr 35min 17sec.

Favourite going into the race, Croft lived up to expectations with her dominant-all-the-way victory.

After a conservative start, her goal was just to get the halfway stage in one piece and hit her straps from there, without pushing it too hard.

A winner of the 55km category last year, she was racing the 26km course for the first time yesterday.

"It was a good day out," she said of finishing and still feeling refreshed.

Racing last year had taken a toll and over recent months it had been a case of rebuilding, she said.

She used yesterday's 26km race as a gauge to see where she was as part of her build-up to racing in Europe over the New Zealand winter.

Triathlon convert Becky de la Harpe won the 11km Race the Summit event in 56min 7sec.

Maggie Bichard was second in 1hr 4min 47sec and Celine Barnes third in 1hr 7min 47sec.
