Leith and Caversham showed their depth to retain their respective titles at the annual Leith cross-country relays on Saturday.

Leith held on to its senior men’s crown after coming in more than 50 seconds faster than Hill City-University in the 41st edition of the relays at the Dunedin Pony Club.

Grayson Westgate, Janus Staufenberg, Dan Hayman and Liam Chesney — who ran the fastest senior men’s lap in 13 min 42 sec — finished the 4x4 km course in 57 min 17 sec to win the event, ahead of Hill City-University’s Matt Bolter, Nico Alvarez Rey-Virag, Jake Owen and Kirk Madgwick in 58 min 7 sec.

Leith was also victorious in the masters men’s 35-plus and 50-plus 4x2 km relays and in the masters women’s 35-plus race.

Caversham picked up the senior women’s 4x2 km title.

Becky de la Harpe, Kristy Eyles, Laura Bungard and Sophie Shallard stormed home in 33 min 15 sec, ahead of Hill City-University’s Rebecca Allnutt, Carly Smith, Erin McKevitt and Zara Geddes (34 min 1 sec).

Geddes ran the fastest senior women’s lap of the day in 7 min 47 sec, 3 sec faster than her lap last year.

Caversham also won the under-18 mixed relays and the master’s men’s 60-plus event.

Hill City-University secured the boys and girls under-14 titles, while Taieri Untouchables were victorious in the all-grades mixed social event.

There was more success for Caversham with Ben Pigou won the fourth Ponydale Challenge, an individual event running concurrently with the relays.

Pigou won the overall, and senior men’s, challenge, tasking athletes with completing as many 2 km laps as possible in a three-hour period, with style, finishing no fewer than 18 laps in 2 hr 56 min 12 sec.

Leith’s Ryan Whitburn was runner-up in the senior men’s, completing 16 laps in 2 hr 56 min 8 sec.

Chris Bisley (Leith) won the masters men’s 35-plus title (17 laps, 2hr 53min 11sec), Eric Scharpf (Hill City-University) won the master’s men’s 50-plus race (15 laps, 2 hr 58 min 2 sec), Emma Timmis (Don Greig Racing Stables) secured the masters women’s 35-plus title (16 laps, 2 hr 53 min 39 sec) and Donna Tumaru (Caversham) won the masters women’s 50-plus crown (11 laps, 2 hr 51 min 35 sec).
