Caitlin Dore is set to unleash her record-breaking form on Melbourne.

The Taieri para-athlete is coming off a successful Otago championships in which she threw 9m in the shot put and 23.32m in the javelin, breaking her own F37 para New Zealand records.

Now she is preparing to compete at the Victorian championships in Melbourne, having flown out of Auckland yesterday.

It was an encouraging result for the 21-year-old, having switched to focus on shot put after the F37 javelin was taken off the list of guaranteed events for the 2020 Paralympics.

''It's probably been about eight months now and shot put's progressing really well,'' she said.

''I'm now a full-time shot putter. I'm still doing a bit of jav, as you can probably see by the results [from the weekend].

''So shot put's going really well. I've made some really good gains and there's obviously so much more to come.''

After initially not being too keen on the change, Dore is now loving her new event.

She has been training well and knows the 9m mark is within her grasp.

Technique has been a big focus and she feels she is now moving across the circle better, as well as making some good strength gains.

''I've been consistently hitting some good throws over the last three weeks and I've just been holding out.

''I knew I was capable of the 9m in the shot, but it just wasn't quite ready to come out yet.

''But it came out on Saturday and it just felt like the right moment and my body felt good and I was in a really good head space. Everything just kind of clicked together.''

She is looking forward to competing in Melbourne, her first overseas competition after a quiet season.

She will compete on Saturday in both the shot put and javelin.

That will be followed by the New Zealand championships next weekend.

After that she will head into a winter training block, alongside focusing on her bachelor of applied management degree at Otago Polytechnic.

From there, she will look to qualify for both the 2019 para world championships, with the ultimate target the Tokyo Paralympics.
