It was Gore to the fore at a snooker tournament in Timaru last weekend.

Three of the four semifinalists at the South Island RSA Singles Snooker Tournament in Timaru were from Gore.

Kevin Wright and Evan Fricker, of the Gore RSA club, battled it out in what was seen as a riveting Sunday final.

Wright took home the honours, a satisfying outcome after coming runner-up twice before.

Along with Wright and Fricker, the other semifinalists were Craig Bradbury, also of Gore RSA, and Barry Ware, who is president of the Timaru RSA snooker section, South Canterbury.

Over the weekend, 36 keen snooker players played at three venues around the district.

The South Canterbury and Rangiora RSAs fielded strong teams and did well.

Chris Buckley, of the Alexandra RSA snooker club, took home the Consolation Winner trophy and Fricker took home the trophy for highest break with a 39.

The Gore RSA team of Wright, Fricker, Bradbury, John Smith, Ernie MacManus, Virginia Henderson, Lloyd Miller and Elaine Dawson punched above their weight.

Fricker said it was great to see such a strong field and it was a credit to the Timaru RSA that the tournament ran like clockwork with exceptional hospitality.
