Pupil Lucas, 12, and his mother Lisa Miller, who also teaches at the school, had their hair cut off last week and raised more than $2000 for the Child Cancer Foundation.
Lucas’s hair was long enough to be sent to Freedom Hair Dunedin to be made into a wig.
He used to have long hair because he liked it, Lucas said.
Then he found out about the charity that makes wigs out of long hair for those people who lose their hair when they have cancer treatment.
He decided to grow his hair so it could be cut off and used to make a wig.
"My hair was about 45cm long when I cut it off."
Mrs Miller said at the start Lucas had a goal of raising $1000.
"I told him if he managed $1500 I would shave mine as well."
She was very impressed with her son’s efforts.
"Lucas has an incredibly kind heart. He showed great empathy and understanding when he learnt more about this cause.
"I am incredibly proud of the role model Lucas is to other students in our school."
