The streets of Winton came alive at the weekend when the Southland town held its annual open day.

Families from across the region enjoyed a day filled with community spirit, entertainment and fun.

Winton resident Denise Guyton said the event was one of the highlights of the year for the community.

‘‘It is very important to have stuff like this here for the children to have fun and everyone get together.‘‘I don’t think we have enough of those — it should be more often,’’ she said.

Invercargill boy Ames Pradhan had an early celebration of his sixth birthday.

His favourite part was to meet police officers and have a close look at the police cars and even a police dog.

When asked if he would like to be an officer when he grew up, he did not hesitate.

‘‘Yes. When I became taller,’’ he said.

The day also had presentations from local groups, food and market stalls, a pet zoo and a parade.

Winton Business Association committee member Maria Scammell said the day was special.

‘‘It’s always an exciting, festival-type atmosphere among the crowd with plenty of smiling faces everywhere.

‘‘We have lots of families turn up and enjoy a fun day and a memorable family event for all involved.’’
