The new award — as part of the 2025 Datagrid NZ Southland Business Excellence Awards — would be known as the Reece McDonald Local Legend Award.
This people’s choice award honours the late Reece McDonald, former board president of the Southland Business Chamber, who was not only a respected business leader but also a tireless community supporter. Through his work as owner of Good Tech and his dedication to local causes — from grassroots sports teams to major fundraisers — he became a connector of people, a champion of generosity, and a true Southland legend, the chamber said in a statement.
The award will celebrate a current business owner who goes above and beyond for the community, embodying the same spirit of generosity and connection Mr McDonald was so well known for.
"This is a special tribute for a special guy," Mr McDonald’s wife, Joanne Sharp, said.
"Reece had a gift for bringing people together, supporting others and always doing the right thing — even when no-one was watching. I miss him so much, but I know he would be truly honoured to be remembered this way."
Nominations open today and chamber members and the wider Southland community are encouraged to nominate a business owner who makes a meaningful difference in their community.
Nominations are open until May 15. — APL
