SBW loving the drama of knockout stages

This is what Sonny Bill Williams came back to New Zealand for - the chance to play in a semifinal of a World Cup, and to help the All Blacks take the next step.

Williams said yesterday this had to be right up there in terms of games he had played, but that would all depend on the result of the game.

"It is a big occasion. But I probably won't be able to say how big until afterwards. If we win, then we go on to the final, which will be massive," Williams said.

"First, I hope I get picked and be involved. If I am, then that will be great. There is nothing better than this stage. That is pretty much the whole reason why I came back here - trying to test myself against the best players."

Despite the importance of the event this Sunday against the Wallabies, Williams was not finding it any more intense this week.

"I'm not really feeling any extra pressure as an individual. I'm not reading any media and just concentrating on those little things . . . I'm not looking at the past, just looking into the future with those details that are part of the game. Ticking all the boxes."

Williams (26) had started out as a midfield back but had found himself as a winger in recent times, with a fine game against the Argentinians last week.

"I have surprised myself how well I have gone on the wing."

Williams, though, is probably destined for the substitutes bench this week with Cory Jane and Richard Kahui likely to start on the flanks.

Williams will surely make an impact off the bench but if it does go haywire, and the All Blacks do lose, this could be the last time he may be seen on these shores.

He has yet to commit to New Zealand next year, although there is talk he will play for the Blues.

Williams will meet one of his good mates, Quade Cooper, if selected for Sunday's game.

He had caught up with Cooper during the tournament but said on the field that mateship would be forgotten.

He felt Cooper getting a bagging from All Black fans showed in some way the respect New Zealanders had for him as a player.
