New rules to control pollution entering Otago's waterways have attracted 333 submissions to the Otago Regional Council.
The council notified changes to its water plan covering rural run-off into waterways last month.
The new rules were among many planned changes to improve Otago's water quality.
Policy director Fraser McRae said he had been expecting submission numbers to be about the 300 mark so was pleased with the response.
Submissions came from individuals, the farm-related sector and industry, he said.
Although there was unanimous support for the principle of the changes, there were "clearly misunderstandings and confusion" among many.
In general, farm-related submissions expressed concerns about understanding what the rules meant for farmers and how they could comply with the standards, while industry submissions seemed to want to retain the status quo, he said.
Staff would notify all those who made submissions and call for further submissions. A staff report would then be written, with a hearing expected in August or September.
