Paragliders have been left up in the air over when they will be able to drive again to one of their favourite launch places — the Treble Cone Skifield west of Wanaka.
Heavy rain at the end of last year caused a slip which has closed the road.
When it will reopen is unclear.
There is still a week to go until the 59 Treble Cone shareholders hand over ownership of Treble Cone over to the Cardrona Alpine Resort.
New Zealand Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association southern club president Tim Brown accepted yesterday the road was closed for safety reasons, but said paragliders were finding the lack of access inconvenient.
"We’re trying to find other places for guys to drive to.
"At the moment they’re all getting very fit walking up mountains around the place."
Options include walking part way up Mt Roy, although some are using the Pisa Range and mountains east of Lake Hawea, or driving up to the take-off site at the Cardrona resort.
Mr Brown used Coronet Peak which offered a "classic route" to the Upper Clutha.
However, it was intimidating, he said, because although there were plenty of places to land north of Coronet Peak, it was a "bloody long walk out".
Often those walking up mountains were using lightweight "hike and fly" gear which weighed between 12kg and 18kg.
