The expansion of Wanaka’s Mt Aspiring College has taken another step after the Ministry of Education applied to the Queenstown Lakes District Council for resource consent for a new building.

The two storey, 10m-high classroom block on Plantation Rd would allow the school to cater for 1450 students, an increase of 300.

The development would have the equivalent of 28 new teaching spaces and include room for music, drama, art and theatre, as well as a library.

There would also be 33 new car parks in addition to the 50 existing parks.

The application noted the ministry was in the process of buying the Queenstown Lakes District Council’s old public swimming pool next door to the school, which would provide parking space.

In July, the Government announced redevelopment funding of $33.5 million for the school.
