About 60 people attended a public meeting organised by the Hawea Community Association at the Lake Hawea community centre on Thursday night to hear the latest concept plans for the Capell Ave shopping precinct.
Quartz Development Group director Matt Laming said it was an unusual approach to seek feedback at such an early stage but the shopping zone was in the heart of the town and the developers wanted to "do the best they possibly could by the community".
Mr Laming presented two concept drawings, one which featured the Bodkin St reserve moved from the corner of the development and incorporated into its centre.
He said "swapping around" the Bodkin St reserve land to become part of the development was his preferred option but he needed to have community support before he lobbied the Queenstown Lakes District Council for the change.
Mr Laming said the plan was for a two-storey development but what would be contained there would be determined by demand.
Suggestions at the meeting included an undertaker and a public transport hub to meet the needs of Lake Hawea's ageing population.
It was the second time Mr Laming had sought resident feedback to his development, having presented the idea initially at a Hawea Community Association meeting in May.
