Wanaka is a step closer to having another major supermarket in the town.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council confirmed it had received an application for resource consent to build and operate a supermarket in the new Three Parks development.
QLDC deputy mayor Calum MacLeod said the resource application from Foodstuffs South Island was for the establishment and operation of another New World supermarket, and associated access, car parking, loading, signage and landscaping in Ballantyne Rd.
The site was beside the Wanaka Recreation Centre and was within the commercial core subzone of the development which allowed for large-scale retail development.
In the resource application, it said the site would be set back from a proposed, future intersection with a main road though the Three Parks development, which runs between Ballantyne Rd and the Wanaka-Luggate Highway.
It will be bounded on two sides by proposed new roads; one road to the northwest and the other to the south with car parking covering areas to the east and north sides of the supermarket building.
Mr MacLeod said it could be ''18 months to two years before it opens its doors''.
