The Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust raised $45,000 as the recipients of the annual Wānaka Golf Club’s charity golf tournament last weekend.

This is the highest figure in the history of the Hirepool Tournament, which has 58 teams and 232 entrants.

Trust chairman Dave Evans said he was "absolutely blown away" by the amount raised, and it was "better than we ever could have dreamed of".

He said the money would go towards those families in the area who were struggling to meet the basic medical needs of their children.

Golf club general manager Kim Badger said the trust and the club worked hard to get good sponsors and donations for the auction and the event was successful.

The children’s trust was born 10 years ago in Wānaka to help families in need and those who cannot afford medical care for their children.

Trust member Laurel Gilks said in that decade the trust had helped over 400 families.

"It is for the medical care for children of families who can’t afford to pay for it, one of the greatest needs in Wānaka at present," she said.
