Contact Energy is in the process of planning the project and company representatives have talked to about 100 residents at a drop-in centre in the Wyndham Community Hall over the past couple of days.
Contact strategic general manager James Flannery said up to 50 turbines would be built on farmland at Mimihau.
Each turbine would produce 6 megawatts of power.
"It could potentially be New Zealand’s largest wind farm.
The company was excited about the wind farm, Mr Flannery said.
"We think it’s a great opportunity but it’s not always up to us. It’s up to what the locals think about it."
Annually the wind farm would produce enough energy to run Fonterra’s Edendale site or 150,000 households.
Feedback had been mostly in favour of the proposal, Mr Flannery said.
The company was working with Kai Tahu to name the potential wind farm.
Roaring40s Wind Power Ltd consultants are involved with the planning of the project.
Wind Power director Steve Harding said it had planned to start building the wind farm in 2025.
It would be operational partway through 2027.
Menzies College teacher Louise Youngson said more renewable energy sources would be needed with fossil fuels being phased out and projects such as the wind farm were needed.
"You can still farm underneath [and] they’re already on our landscape so why not?
"We’ve got to do something for our future."
Wyndham resident Andrew Shepherd was in also favour of the wind farm.
"I hope it all goes ahead and they might give us all free power ... when they kick it into gear."
