Three children were arrested in Invercargill for fleeing police after breaking into six cars yesterday, police say.

Sergeant Brett Cronin said the three children under 14 years old were arrested about 10am yesterday.

Police were notified after a member of the public reported a car being driven suspiciously with objects being thrown out its windows.

Police located the vehicle, which was stolen, after it had been abandoned.

The occupants were tracked by police dog handlers and the three children were subsequently arrested.

Meanwhile, Invercargill police are investigating a youth they believe has broken into up to 50 cars in the city and taken part in a ram-raid.

Sgt Cronin was limited to what information he could disclose, but said admissions had been made to the unlawful break-ins of several cars, and involvement in a ram-raid.

Both matters are now being dealt with through the Youth Court.
