Brett Lindsay has a sweet ride, and, it turns out, a sweet tooth.

The Wellington man has ridden his Volkswagen trike from the capital to Invercargill for the Burt Munro rally, raising both awareness and money for Dunedin-based charity, Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust.

He has also been on a second mission — finding the South Island’s best chocolate eclair.

He stopped in Dunedin yesterday on his way back north, where he said he was having a ball.

"There’s been really good hospitality, really good people," he said.

It was not the first charity ride he had done — he has also donated to causes such as breast cancer, and Heart Kids.

He chose Life Matters because of New Zealand’s woeful suicide statistics.

"I think it’s crazy more isn’t being done," he said.

"I’m just one person. I’m a drop in the bucket, but if it turns out, with the ride and the signage, it’s just a little bit extra, that’s great."

As well as his Givealittle web page, The Great South Island Choc Eclair Hunt And Fundraiser, people have also been generous with their cash in person.

He had raised about $1200 so far, and aimed for $10,000.

And as for the all-important chocolate eclair competition?

A baker in Invercargill was topping the list so far.

"I’ve eaten truckloads. I’ve lost count. Did I weigh myself before I left Wellington? No."

He intended to get to Wellington by Thursday.
