Sir Tim on Santa duty for Christmas party

Sir Tim Shadbolt has a new job — Santa Claus.

After eight years hosting his community Christmas lunch, the former mayor of Invercargill exchanged the mayoral chains for a Santa suit.

He delivered presents to the children there and showed all the guests he was enjoying the new role.

"Well, this is a new job for me ... This is my first year as Santa," he quipped.

"It is a celebration. People donated food and presents for those who don’t have family here."

His favourite thing about the day was the cheerful and festive spirit of people.

"They just want to celebrate the year and looking forward to the next one."

Sir Tim teamed up with organisers Teressa Laughton, Linda Howard and Daniel Johansen to host Sir Tim’s Christmas Lunch yesterday.

About 40 guests identified by community organisations as those in need were invited to the lunch, which had a new location — Whanake House.

Ms Howard was pleased with the generosity of the community.

"We received $2400 in donations and this is what enables this lunch to happen."

It was an important event for many in the community as it gave them something to look forward to as well as enjoy.

Invercargill resident Eliard Darragh said it was not her first time at the lunch.

"I’ve been coming here for years. It is a great way to celebrate Christmas."

Dom Just could not hide his smile after Santa’s visit. When asked what his favourite thing about Christmas was he could not choose between the presents, the food and being able to play with his sibling — "it is one of my favourite days of the year," he said.
